Hafilat Bus Cards Set to Launch in May

Hafilat Bus Cards Set to Launch in May. Abu Dhabi is set to transform its public transport system with the launch of the new Hafilat bus card in May. Designed to offer smarter, fairer, and more flexible travel, the system introduces per-kilometer fare calculation and nationwide usability across the UAE.

What Is the New Hafilat Card System?

The Department of Transport Abu Dhabi has announced the rollout of upgraded Hafilat (bus) cards, allowing passengers to pay fares based on the exact distance travelled. This modern system aims to improve cost efficiency and convenience for daily commuters.

Key Features of Hafilat Bus Cards

  • Per-kilometre billing for accurate fare calculation
  • Usable across the UAE, not limited to Abu Dhabi
  • Smart tap system when boarding and exiting buses
  • Balance check in real-time before starting the trip
  • Easy recharge options via machines and vending points

According to Mohammad Bin Malek, this system eliminates fare rounding, ensuring passengers only pay for the exact distance travelled.

Hafilat Fare Structure Explained

The new pricing model is designed to be simple and affordable:

  • Within city: Fixed fare of Dh2 per trip
  • Suburban travel (Al Ain, Western Region): Dh2 + Dh0.05 per km
  • Inter-emirate travel: Starts at Dh10 + Dh 0.1 per km

This flexible system ensures fair pricing for both short and long-distance travelers.

Types of Hafilat Cards Available

Passengers can choose from multiple card options:

1. Temporary Cards

  • 14-day paper card (up to Dh150 balance)
  • 7-day city-only card with fixed Dh30 value

2. Permanent Cards

  • Rechargeable plastic cards (up to Dh150 per recharge)
  • Weekly plan: Dh30
  • Monthly plan: Dh80

3. Personal Cards

  • Linked with user photo and details
  • Easy replacement if lost or damaged

4. Special Category Cards

  • Free travel for senior citizens and people with disabilities (within Abu Dhabi)
  • Student cards: Dh500/year (city & suburbs), Dh150/year (emirate-wide travel)

Recharge & Card Availability

To make access easier:

  • Ticket vending machines will be installed in malls, clinics, bus stations, and government offices
  • 155 recharge machines will be available at bus shelters and key locations
  • Machines accept cash and cards, but recharge kiosks will not return change

Important Update for Passengers

From May 15, passengers cannot pay with cash or coins on buses. All payments must be made using Hafilat cards.

However, existing Ojra cards will remain valid for six months after launch to help users transition smoothly.

Future Transport Goals

According to Mohammad Nasser Al Otaiba, the government plans to:

  • Increase bus usage from 4% to 10% within five years
  • Upgrade all bus shelters to air-conditioned facilities

Final Thoughts

The launch of the Hafilat card system marks a major step toward a smarter and more efficient public transport network in Abu Dhabi. With accurate fare calculation, multiple card options, and improved accessibility, commuters can expect a more seamless travel experience across the UAE.
